I spent five years at this award winning tattoo shop, where I gained experience and indispensable wisdom from my coworkers and the many guest artists who came through. I moved to Austin in 2004 and was fortunate to land a spot at the legendary Atomic Tattoo where I continued to develop as an artist. As my reputation and clientele grew in Austin, I eventually began to work by appointment only in order to better accommodate scheduling large custom tattoos.

FAQ

How much will my tattoo cost?

Can you cover up an old tattoo?

Can you cover up an old tattoo?

Each tattoo is priced based on the size, complexity, and time it takes to complete. During your consultation we can talk about the design and I can quote you a price for small or medium sized tattoos. Large, multi-session tattoos are charged by the hour, and I can give you low and high estimates of what the final cost might be.

Many tattoos can be covered or reworked, but some will need a few sessions of laser removal first. The darker and denser the old tattoo is, the fewer your options might be in subject matter and style for the cover-up. Organic designs with black shading and strong color usually work best. I have also had success with using black and opaque grays to cover old tattoos that have no color.

How long do I need to take care of my tattoos?

You should stay away from pools, hot tubs, and other bodies of water until your tattoo is finished healing and peeling. This can take anywhere from 1 to 3 weeks depending on the tattoo and your body's ability to heal.

Tattoo care, like all skin care, is a lifelong task. The better you treat your skin, the better your tattoo will age. I recommend using moisturizer on your tattoos to keep your black crisp and colors bright.  Also, remember to always protect your tattoos from the damaging UV rays of the sun with either UV blocking clothing or sunblock with SPF 50 or higher.

Can I leave a deposit online?

Can I leave a deposit online?

I can schedule your consultation over the internet, and then take a deposit for your tattoo in person at the shop. Atomic Tattoo currently requires all payments be made in person at the shop, where our friendly front counter staff can help you complete your deposit form and payment.

Will I need a touch up?

Most tattoos won't need any touch ups, but sometimes a little spot might not heal well and there is some ink loss, or maybe once it has healed and settled it ends up a bit lighter than expected. If that happens, let me know within 6 months of completing your tattoo and we can set up a quick touch up.

Do tattoos need to be redone when they have aged?

Most of the time I do not recommend going back over old tattoos, but instead letting them age naturally and gracefully. That is, unless the tattoo has faded substantially, then it might be a candidate for being redone or reworked.  If you have questions about what can be done with an old, faded tattoo, feel free to reach out.

Heal Well and Enjoy Your New Tattoo!

  1. Keep the bandage on your tattoo for at least 2 hours.
  2.  Wash your hands, then remove the bandage and wash the tattoo gently with warm water and a mild liquid soap. It might be easier to do this in the shower if a large area has been tattooed.
  3. Pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel.
  4. Apply a thin layer of Aquaphor or fragrance and dye free lotion
  5. Put a fresh bandage on the tattoo
  6. Keep the tattoo bandaged while sleeping to prevent sticking to sheets
  7. Keep pets, children, and dirty objects away from the tattoo
  8. No swimming, hot tubs, or soaking until the tattoo is done peeling.
  9. Keep the tattoo out of the sun for 6 weeks, then use sunblock or UV blocking clothes to protect it when you will be in the sun.

  1. Repeat care from Day 1 as needed. I recommend cleaning and moisturizing the tattoo 3-5 times per day.
  2. If there is excess swelling, you can make a ziplock icepack, wrap it in fresh paper towels, and apply for 5 minutes at a time as needed.
  3. Foot or leg tattoos might require that you stay off your feet and elevate the area for a few days.
  4. If your aftercare product is causing any problems, stop using that product, rinse the remaining product off, and let me know. We can discuss alternative moisturizers.

  1. The tattoo should begin to itch and peel.
  2. Do not scratch, pick, or help it peel, just let it peel on its own.
  3. Keep moisturizing the tattoo area several times per day.
  4. Keep the tattoo covered with clean, loose clothing

  1. After it has peeled once, the tattoo might be dry, itchy or cloudy. Keep moisturizing the tattoo area and this will help.
  2. This cloudy layer of skin might begin to peel during the 2nd or 3rd week. This is normal. By the 3rd or 4th week, the tattoo will look very crisp and almost like a fake tattoo.
  3. In the next few months, your tattoo will begin to settle into the permanent layer and will soften up a little bit. Your skin's melanin layer is now on top of the tattoo ink and might affect the contrast, brightness, or saturation of the color.
  4. Continue to moisturize your tattoo as needed. Always keep your tattoos out of the sun if possible. When you must be in the sun, use SPF 50 or higher sunblock or clothing to protect the tattoo.
